Safety culture is very important in occupational health, fire and safety as it reflects the behavior to be expected of the occupiers of a building in an emergency. It is important to know what is expected of you when evacuating a building in an emergency, as such the 6 months emergency drill is designed to simulate a real emergency and thus to enable corrective steps to be put in place, where shortfalls have been observed in the emergency drill.
Some of the things one shouldn't do when evacuating a building in an emergency may sound obvious but never the less, has to be highlighted here because it does happen. Modern technology has brought about a faster rate of communication and response time but in the same paradigm it has made us absent minded and we have lost the sense of focus on how to prioritize.
In case of an emergency:
1. Be aware of your surrounding and react accordingly.
2. Do not go taking selfie, beware of your environment and the pending risk, evacuate as per the instruction from your health and safety induction training or
3. Follow the instruction of the fire marshal/warden in your area.
4. Do not waste time texting, whatsapping or tweeting about the on going emergency while you are caught in the middle of it and haven't yet got to safety.
5. Show care and help others while trying to escape in an emergency, rather than wasting time taking pictures to share with friends or on social media.
6. Treat every emergency evacuation drill as the real thing, that means do not stop to pick personal belongings or think you have time to hold a cup of coffee or having a casual conversation on the phone when escaping.
7. The time taken to evacuate a building is very crucial in reducing the risk of fatality.
8. Assemble at the defined assembly location and wait until you have been accounted for and the building given the all clear before going back in.
Think safety, be safe
